moto g87 with 6.78″ 1.5K 120Hz AMOLED display, 200MP camera, IP69 ratings announced

motorola has introduced the moto g87, a new smartphone in the ‘g series’ and the successor to last year’s g77. The device features notable upgrades in its camera hardware, display technology, and durability ratings compared to previous iterations in the moto g series.

Camera System

The device is equipped with a high-resolution camera array centered around a newly integrated main sensor.

  • Main Camera: A 200-megapixel sensor featuring Optical Image Stabilization (OIS) and Ultra Pixel technology, which Motorola states increases light sensitivity by 16 times for low-light photography. It also supports 2x lossless zoom.
  • Secondary Lenses: The rear camera module includes an 8MP ultrawide lens, while the front of the device houses a 32MP front-facing camera for portraits and video calls.
  • Software Integration: The camera software includes features such as Auto Smile Capture and a versatile Portrait Mode that allows users to shoot at 24mm, 35mm, and 50mm focal lengths. The device integrates with Google Photos to provide AI-assisted editing tools like Magic Eraser, Photo Unblur, Reimagine, and Auto Frame.
Display

The moto g87 features a 6.78-inch (listed in some regions as 6.8-inch) Extreme AMOLED display.

  • Resolution and Refresh Rate: It offers a 1.5K resolution—representing a 17% increase over standard Full HD—and supports a 120Hz refresh rate for smoother interface navigation and media playback.
  • Brightness: The display utilizes High Brightness Mode, capable of reaching up to 5000 nits, managed by an advanced ambient light sensor to adjust to varying indoor and outdoor lighting conditions.
Durability and Build Quality

Motorola has emphasized ruggedness in the design of the moto g87, incorporating multiple layers of physical protection:

  • Water and Dust Resistance: The smartphone holds IP66, IP68, and IP69 ratings, offering substantial protection against dust and water, including underwater submersion.
  • Impact Resistance: The display is shielded by Corning® Gorilla® Glass 7i. Furthermore, the device is built to MIL-STD-810H military standards, providing shock resistance and certification to withstand drops from up to 1.2 meters.
  • Design: The device will be available in three Pantone-curated color options.
Audio

The audio system has been upgraded to produce sound up to 280% louder than the previous generation. The device features dual stereo speakers, supports Dolby Atmos for spatial audio, and carries Hi-Res Audio certification for higher fidelity media playback.

Performance and Battery
  • Processing and Memory: The smartphone is powered by the MediaTek Dimensity 6400 platform, providing 5G connectivity. It includes up to 12GB of physical RAM, which can be virtually expanded up to 24GB using Motorola’s RAM Boost feature.
  • Battery Specifications: The device runs on a 5200 mAh battery. For recharging, it supports TurboPower™ 30 fast charging.
Software

The moto g87 will ship with Android 16. It includes Motorola’s proprietary software suite, such as Hello UX for interface customization, Moto Secure for privacy, and Smart Connect for cross-device functionality. It also features integrated Google services, including Chat with Gemini and Circle to Search.
