Lenovo introduced a range of products here at the Mobile World Congress. Some interesting, some decidedly less so. The Lenovo S850 falls in the first category because of its interesting mix of hardware design and generally decent performance. We spent some time with the handset and here’s what we thought about it.

The front of the phone has a large 5 inch IPS panel with a resolution of 720 x 1280 pixels. With decent viewing angles and vibrant colors we were fairly impressed by the display on offer here. That said, the all glass construction of the phone is extremely reflective which makes sunlight readability particularly hard.

Moving to the right side of the phone, you spot the volume rocker and power key. The sides of the phone are made of aluminum and are finished in a very unique material that makes it a bit more grippy. As we mentioned earlier, both the front and back of the phones is made of glass.

The left side of the phone has the slot for the SIM card slots. The phone is of the dual SIM variety. Above it is the grill for the speaker. Unfortunately the phone does not have a microSD card slot.

Powering the phone is a 1.3Ghz quad core Mediatek MT6582 processor. Paired with it is 1GB of RAM. The MTK processor is just about powerful enough to allow the handset to breeze through the interface but we’re not sure how well it will cope up with extended usage and multitasking.

One of the coolest aspects of the Lenovo S850 is the lighting under the logo. The notification light is under the Lenovo logo and it glows in multiple colors depending on the scenario. This is a very unique take and looks quite cool as well.

While the Lenovo S850 is a thoroughly mid range device, some subtle flourishes like the glowing notification LED in the logo help it stand out. The above average design and use of quality materials too are worth pointing out. We wish the phone had a built in microSD card slot that is quite important in this category of products. The phone will go on sale at a price point of $270 later this year.
