FIFA 14 released as free to download for iOS in NZ

FIFA 14 is set for release in the next week across consoles and PC, but today we EA released the FIFA 14 app for iOS as a free app in the App Store, but only in New Zealand. The game has been released as a free game, but to unlock features and extras in-app purchases come into play.

The game comes as a 1.16GB download and requires at least 1.35GB free space on the device for it to be installed. Unlike other EA Games which thwarted the gaming experience with in-app purchases for everything, things seem to have taken a different route this time. There are two types of in-app purchase – one which involves buying in-game currency for unlocking specific features and the other in which the user pays a on-time 5.99$ for “Premium” mode which unlocks kickoff, Manager and Tournament modes.

Currently, the game is available only in NZ and it is not yet available in any other App Store. The release of its bigger brother – FIFA 14 for consoles and PC is slated for next week and this could mean that this is just another soft launch. Soft launches gives the developers a way to publicly test their app with realtime traffic to gauge the performance of online multiplayer modes and the load their servers can handle. There is no official word on whether the game is a soft launch or if it will be rolling out to other countries in the coming hours, but we will bring you more information as soon as we have a word.
