The Nokia Lumia 1020 was shown off as the best camera on a smartphone at the announcement in New York. Our initial impressions of the device echoed the same thoughts but what makes it an even greater camera is the accessory that released along with the device. Yes, the Nokia Lumia 1020 launched along with a unique camera grip accessory that enhances the usage of the Lumia 1020 as a camera. You might have note in our unboxing that we definitely wanted to own the accessory soon, and that we did. Here’s an unboxing of the camera grip in video –

We recently got the black coloured camera grip from the US, as you saw above in the video. On the back of the box you can see that the case comes in three colours, the same ones as the Lumia 1020 colour variants. While we have the yellow one, we still were only able to get the black camera grip.

Anyway, the camera grip is quite special. On the front, you can see that the case nicely sits on the back of the phone with a rubbery grip and a hump on the sides, making it perfect for one handed device usage. It also makes it look like a proper point and shoot camera with a pan cake lens, well, kinda.

The hump on the side is actually an in-built 1020 mAH battery that powers the device when you choose to turn it on. It charges the phone as an external battery and has indicators for battery levels and a switch for turning it on and off. Below the battery level indicator LEDs, you also have the micro USB port should you choose to transfer photos or even charge the device.

Over at the bottom of the grip, you have a tripod mount that can be used for mounting the device on a… tripod of course. The standard screw type makes sure you don’t need to use any extra adapter to make it work. Considering the fact that the Pro Cam lets you take long exposure shots at 4s, this will come in real handy.

Over at the other side is the shutter button(not pictured above), a two stage generously sized key that works really really well for the usual camera function. This is probably one of the best implementations we have seen and used and it is done very well. Overall we think this is THE Nokia Lumia 1020 accessory to get. With additional power, a better grip and a brilliant two stage button, the Lumia 1020 becomes a better camera than it already is.
