India smartphone shipments declined an estimated 26% year-on-year (YoY) to 35.8 million units in 3Q26, according to Omdia, marking the lowest third-quarter shipment volume since 2016 despite the start of the festive season.
According to Omdia, higher smartphone prices and cautious consumer spending weighed on replacement demand, prompting vendors to take a conservative approach to inventory.
The report also attributed the quarterly decline partly to the later timing of Diwali, which shifted a significant portion of offline festive inventory build-up from September to October, while weaker online-focused shipments added to the pressure.

3Q26 vendor performance
- Samsung regained the top spot for the first time since 1Q24, shipping 6.7 million units. The Galaxy A07, A17 and A27 supported shipments, while the Galaxy S26 series, new Z foldables and S26 FE broadened its higher-value portfolio. Bank cashback, exchange benefits and longer-tenure financing supported upgrades across price tiers.
- vivo ranked second with shipments of 6.4 million units, down 34% YoY, the sharpest decline among the top five vendors. Repeated price hikes disrupted channel inventory planning, while constrained entry-level supplies weakened its competitiveness. The Y11 5G and Y21 5G supported shipments, while the returning S-series, led by the S2, also contributed.
- OPPO ranked third with shipments of 4.9 million units, down 24% YoY, as rising prices and cautious retailer stocking weighed on its core A-series volumes. The Reno16 series supported its premiumization strategy, while camera-led differentiation and financing offers helped sustain demand at higher price points.
- Xiaomi ranked fourth with shipments of 4.7 million units, down 28% YoY. Rising component costs forced trade-offs in pricing and RAM and storage configurations, weakening its value proposition. The Redmi 15A and A7 supported shipment volumes, while the Redmi Note 17 series, POCO X8 and X8 Power contributed to its higher-value portfolio.
- Apple rounded out the top five with shipments of 3.9 million units. Channel stocking ahead of anticipated price hikes and sustained demand for the base iPhone 17 and iPhone 16 models supported shipments, amid the absence of a new base iPhone 18. The late-quarter launch of the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max gained momentum, supported by bank cashback, exchange bonuses and flexible no-cost EMI schemes.
Online shipments and market share
India’s smartphone market is shifting from online-led shipment expansion during the festive period to more selective, channel-driven growth, according to Sanyam Chaurasia, Principal Analyst at Omdia. He said,
September, historically a critical inventory build-up period for major online sales events, saw weaker shipment momentum.
Fewer exclusive launches, limited affordable SKUs and narrowing promotional differences reduced the online channel’s traditional festive advantage. This disproportionately affected Chinese OEMs, whose combined market share fell to 68% in 3Q26 from 75% in 3Q25. Samsung and Apple strengthened their positions through premium portfolios, strong consumer demand, established channel partnerships and structured upgrade programs.

India smartphone shipment outlook
Following a difficult 2026, India smartphone shipments are expected to decline by a low-single-digit percentage in 2027 as higher prices and longer device lifecycles continue to weigh on replacement demand. Chaurasia expects pricing pressures to persist through at least the first half of 2027, making compelling device experiences increasingly important in driving upgrades.

As premiumization continues, vendors will need to move beyond incremental hardware improvements and develop AI experiences that offer more proactive, personalized capabilities. Omdia’s User Innovation Readiness research found that nearly four in ten respondents in India could be willing to pay more for a smartphone with useful AI capabilities. Stronger channel partnerships, financing, trade-in and upgrade programs will also be important in converting these innovations into purchases and reducing barriers to replacement.
