OnePlus 16: BOE X4 185Hz gaming display confirmed

OnePlus and BOE have officially announced their co-developed fourth-generation Oriental Screen during a dedicated technology communication conference. The new display panel introduces updated luminescent materials, higher refresh rate targets, and dedicated processing hardware, set to debut on the upcoming OnePlus 16.

Material Upgrades and Hardware Calibration

The fourth-generation panel transitions to custom X4 luminescent material, engineered to improve color accuracy, peak brightness, power efficiency, and overall lifespan. According to OnePlus China President Li Jie, production utilizes a newly upgraded proprietary display science manufacturing line, described as the only one of its kind in China.

Under this process, each sub-pixel undergoes three separate rounds of hardware calibration against “S-level pixel index” specifications. Additionally, the display includes true hardware-level 1-nit low-brightness output to reduce eye strain in dark environments.

165Hz Daily Usability and 185Hz Gaming Support

A core focus of the new panel is refresh rate performance across the entire hardware chain. Utilizing a revised LTPO circuit architecture alongside the X4 material, the panel supports a system-wide 165Hz refresh rate for daily application navigation. For supported gaming scenarios, the display can reach up to 185Hz.

OnePlus reported that despite the higher frame rates, power consumption at 165Hz remains comparable to the 120Hz consumption levels of the preceding generation. The company stated that the architecture minimizes latency, thermal buildup, and frame drops while maintaining color consistency.

Display Processing and OnePlus 16 Debut

The fourth-generation Oriental Screen integrates proprietary “Ultra-Dynamic Clarity Technology” designed to enhance motion sharpness during fast-paced content. It operates alongside OnePlus’s custom P4 display processor, an updated “Bright Eyes Protection” eye-care suite, and an improved outdoor visibility system tailored for high ambient light.

The display will make its commercial debut on the OnePlus 16, which will feature symmetric 1.15mm ultra-narrow bezels on all four sides. The device is scheduled for an official launch on October 12.
