Telegram has introduced a new update bringing smartwatch apps, expanded bot messaging capabilities, AI-powered group moderation tools, and several improvements to browser and link handling across Android and iOS.
Smartwatch Apps for Apple Watch and Wear OS
The update introduces new apps for Apple Watch and Android Wear OS.
Users can:
- Browse chats and media from a smartwatch
- Read messages of any length without using a phone
- Listen to voice messages and watch videos
- Send text messages or voice messages when hands are busy

Platform-specific behavior differences include:
- Android: mute chats, pin chats, and delete messages
- iOS: view locations and send stickers

For HUAWEI watches that cannot run the Wear OS app, users can request support, and the company indicates that dedicated compatibility may be developed in future updates.
Rich Text Formatting for Bots
Bots can now respond with advanced rich text formatting, making messages more structured and expressive.
This includes:
- Formatting, tables, blockquotes, and checklists
- Inline images and extended formatting options
- Unusual or complex formatting structures
- Message length support up to 32,768 characters
- A “Show More” button after the first ~8,000 characters

Developers can also study the official rich text formatting documentation for implementation details.
AI Guardian Bots for Group Chats
Bots can now be added as group administrators to act as automated moderators.
AI Guardian bots can:
- Process and manage join requests
- Approve or reject users based on rules
- Actively moderate conversations and remove messages when needed
- Use mini-app interfaces to screen applicants before approval

The system is designed to help groups filter new members more efficiently before they are allowed to participate.
Links in Poll Options
Poll options now support clickable links, allowing additional context or external references to be attached directly to voting choices.

Support for Markdown (.md) Files
The in-app browser now supports Markdown (.md) files and renders them natively. This allows users to open and view Markdown documents directly inside Telegram without needing external apps.
Quick Browser Selection and Controls
Users can now choose how external links open.
New options include:
- Open links in Telegram browser or external apps
- Long-press links to choose a different browser from the default
- Whitelist websites to always open or never open in the Telegram browser
- The Telegram browser does not store browsing history

The company notes this ensures private browsing sessions, including “course research” and “homework assignments,” are not stored.

Settings can be managed via:
- Android: Settings > Chat Settings > In-App Browser
- iOS: Settings > Privacy and Security > Open Links In
Availability
The update is rolling out with v12.8.0 and later across all supported platforms.
