Android Halo is a new glanceable status tool for AI agents

Google has previewed Android Halo, a new interface feature designed to provide real-time, at-a-glance visibility into background AI agent activities at the Google I/O 2026.

The feature aims to keep users informed of their digital assistant’s operations without disrupting their current on-screen tasks.

Real-Time, Non-Intrusive Updates

Android Halo functions by displaying subtle communication cues at the top of the smartphone screen. This persistent indicator updates dynamically based on the agent’s current state. Users will be able to track when an agent is:

  • Actively processing a background task
  • Operating in “live mode”
  • Preparing to send a direct notification or message

By utilizing the top section of the screen, the tool allows users to monitor multi-step AI workflows or progress bars without needing to open a dedicated application or pause their ongoing activity.

Compatibility and Future Rollout

According to the announcement, Android Halo is scheduled for release later this year. At launch, it will feature native integration with Gemini Spark alongside a selection of other supported AI agents.

  • Hardware-Specific Features: While standard functionality will be widely available, devices equipped with advanced on-device “Gemini Intelligence” will unlock additional, premium capabilities within the Android Halo interface.

Google has stated that more specific details regarding technical specifications, full device compatibility, and the official release timeline will be shared closer to the launch date.
