Instagram has introduced Instants, a new way to share photos in the moment with Close Friends or mutual followers. The feature focuses on real-time, unedited sharing where photos disappear after being viewed and cannot be viewed after 24 hours.
Instants feature
Instants allows users to capture and share photos directly from the Instagram inbox or the Instants app using a small stack icon at the bottom right of the inbox. The camera opens for instant capture, enabling real-time sharing.
Photos shared through Instants follow these rules:
- Captured in real time only
- No uploads from the phone gallery
- No editing before sharing (captions can be added before sending)
- Disappear after being viewed
- Cannot be viewed after 24 hours

Users can share Instants with Close Friends or mutual followers (people they follow back). Recipients can react with emojis, reply, and send Instants back. Replies are delivered directly to Instagram DMs.
Instants appear as a stacked preview in the inbox. Users can send multiple Instants in sequence using a capture button, and an undo option appears immediately after sending to remove an Instant before it is viewed.
All shared Instants are stored in a private archive for up to one year. From this archive, users can create a Recap to Stories by compiling selected Instants into Instagram Stories.

Limitations
Instants includes several usage constraints:
- No editing after capture except captions added before sharing
- No uploads from the phone gallery
- No screenshots or screen recording support
- Content disappears after being viewed
- Content cannot be viewed after 24 hours
- Undo is only available before the Instant is viewed
- Archive deletion only works if the Instant has not been opened
Users can also pause incoming Instants using Snooze mode, activated by holding the inbox stack and swiping right, and re-enable it by swiping left.
Privacy and safety
Instagram applies its existing safety systems to Instants, including block, mute, restrict, and reporting tools. All content is governed by Instagram’s Community Standards, with automated systems used to detect and remove violating content.
Instants are visible only to selected recipients, such as Close Friends or mutual followers.
For teens, Instants is integrated with Teen Accounts and Family Center with no separate setup required. Existing supervision automatically extends to Instants.
Teen safety protections include:
- Shared daily time limits that include Instants usage
- Sleep Mode restricting access and muting notifications between 10 PM and 7 AM
- Parental notification when the Instants app is first downloaded
- Safety tools such as block, mute, restrict, filters, and reporting
- Community Standards enforcement using automated detection systems
- No screenshot or screen recording support
Instants app
Instagram is testing a standalone Instants app in select countries on iOS and Android. The app provides direct camera access for faster sharing while using the same Instagram account.

Instants shared from the app appear on Instagram, and Instants shared on Instagram also appear in the app, ensuring full cross-platform compatibility.
Availability
Instants is rolling out globally as a feature within Instagram. The standalone Instants app is available in select countries on iOS and Android as part of a limited rollout.
