Google has introduced Continued Conversation in Gemini for Home, a new feature aimed at making voice interactions more natural and efficient. The update follows early access feedback, where millions of users opted in and identified seamless follow-up conversations as one of the most requested improvements.
Continued Conversation: How it works
With Continued Conversation enabled, users no longer need to say “Hey Google” for every request. After the initial command, Gemini responds and keeps the microphone active for a few seconds, allowing users to continue speaking.
Supported devices show this listening window through pulsing lights, indicating when the assistant is ready for follow-up input.
Key features and improvements
- Context-aware conversations without repetition: Gemini can retain the flow of a conversation, allowing follow-up queries without repeating previous details, unlike the earlier Google Assistant experience.
- Smarter voice detection in shared spaces: Improved AI helps distinguish between direct commands and background conversations, reducing unintended activations.
- Works across the entire household: Continued Conversation is available to everyone in the home, including family members and guests, ensuring a consistent experience across devices.
Supported devices and how to enable
The feature is available on supported Gemini for Home devices. Users can enable Continued Conversation through the Google Home app:
- Open Google Home app
- Go to Home Settings
- Select Gemini for Home voice assistant
- Enable Continued Conversation
Availability
Continued Conversation is rolling out globally as part of Gemini for Home updates. It is available across all supported languages and regions, expanding beyond its earlier limitation to U.S. English.
