At Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2026, OPPO and MediaTek showcased new on-device AI capabilities during MediaTek’s “AI for Life” keynote, highlighting their collaboration on next-generation AI smartphones. Jason Liao, President of the OPPO Research Institute, noted that the partnership is accelerating AI deployment on mobile devices.
On-Device AI: Chip-to-Experience Approach
OPPO’s AI strategy centers on “New Computing, New Perception, and New Ecosystem”, with on-device compute enabling real-time, privacy-conscious AI processing. Jason Liao stated,
On-device Compute is a cornerstone of OPPO’s AI strategy, making AI a perceptible, real-time experience integrated into everyday usage.
Using the MediaTek Dimensity 9500 platform, OPPO introduced:
- AI Translate: Runs fully on-device, providing a 15% improvement in accuracy over conventional methods. It supports multilingual translation and maintains consistent output even offline or under weak signal conditions.
- AI Portrait Glow: Improves portrait images in dim or backlit environments by analyzing and reconstructing scene illumination, while maintaining natural rendering without relying on network connectivity.
OPPO and MediaTek also previewed Omni, an on-device full-modal AI model supporting voice, video, and text inputs. Omni enables live scene interpretation and interactive Q&A directly on smartphones, expanding the capability for on-device AI to understand physical environments.
Ecosystem Integration
The MediaTek booth featured interactive demonstrations:
- Find X9 Pro: Showcased on-device AI features alongside telephoto imaging with the OPPO Hasselblad Teleconverter.
- Reno15 Pro: Displayed AI imaging tools including AI Motion Photo Eraser, AI Motion Photo Popout, and AI Flash Photography.
OPPO and MediaTek plan to continue collaboration on on-device AI, aiming to enhance user experience through faster, more reliable, and privacy-conscious AI functionality.
Recognition
The Find X9 Pro was shortlisted for the “Best Smartphone” award at the GLOMO Awards, recognizing its integration of performance, imaging, and on-device AI features.
Availability
The AI Translate and AI Portrait Glow features, along with Android™ Quick Share for cross-platform file transfer between OPPO devices, iOS, iPadOS, and macOS, are expected to roll out to the OPPO Find X9 Series via the upcoming ColorOS 16 software update starting in March.
