Google Translate gets new AI features for idioms, tone, and context understanding

Google_Translate

Google has introduced new AI-powered features in Google Translate to help users find the right words and accurately convey tone in conversations, whether informal chats or professional meetings.

With these updates, Translate uses Gemini’s multilingual capabilities to provide multiple translation alternatives, making it easier to handle idioms, colloquial phrases, and nuanced expressions. For example, common sayings like “It’s raining heavily” now include explanations for different ways to convey the same idea, helping users choose the phrasing that best fits the conversation.

New Tools for Translation Nuance

The update introduces two interactive tools to explore translation choices:

  • Understand – Offers an overview of each alternative, explaining subtleties in meaning, tone, and usage.
  • Ask – Allows users to ask questions about specific scenarios, including country- or dialect-specific expressions.

These features are designed to reduce ambiguity and make multilingual conversations more precise.

Availability

The AI-powered features are available on the Google Translate app for Android and iOS in the U.S. and India, with expansion to the web planned soon.
