Google Maps gets Gemini integration, hands-free navigation, landmark-based directions, and proactive traffic alerts

Google Maps has introduced a major update powered by Gemini, Google’s AI assistant, to improve navigation and location-based assistance. According to Amanda Leicht Moore, Director of Product, Google Maps, the update enables a hands-free, conversational driving experience, allowing users to interact with Maps while keeping their focus on driving.

Hands-free, multi-step navigation

Gemini allows drivers to complete complex tasks using voice commands. Users can search for specific locations, check EV charger availability, share ETAs, or add calendar events without touching the device. Multi-step queries are supported, such as:

  • “Is there a budget-friendly restaurant with vegan options along my route?”
  • “What’s parking like there?”
  • “Add soccer practice to my calendar for 5 p.m.”

Traffic disruptions can also be reported by voice, including statements like “I see an accident” or “Watch out for that slowdown.”

Landmark-based directions

In addition to traffic lights and stop signs, Maps now highlights visible landmarks such as restaurants, gas stations, and buildings along the route.

Directions are more specific, e.g., “turn right after the Thai Siam Restaurant.” This feature uses data from Street View and Maps’ database of over 250 million places to provide accurate, location-based guidance.

Proactive traffic alerts

Google Maps can now issue notifications about traffic disruptions even when users are not actively navigating. Alerts include unexpected closures, heavy traffic, or other road issues.

Lens powered by Gemini

After reaching a destination, users can use Lens with Gemini to identify nearby places such as restaurants, cafes, shops, or landmarks. Users can ask questions about these locations, for example, “What is this place and why is it popular?” or “What’s the vibe inside?”
