Samsung could bring wide fold variant to Galaxy Z lineup in 2026: Report

Samsung is planning to expand its Galaxy Z foldable lineup in 2026 with two new Galaxy Z Fold models alongside the current Galaxy Z Flip, a Korean publication, ETNews, reported.

This expansion is aimed at reinforcing Samsung’s position in the foldable segment ahead of Apple’s first foldable iPhone, expected in the second half of next year.

Expanded Foldable Portfolio

Currently, Samsung’s foldable lineup consists of one Galaxy Z Flip and one Galaxy Z Fold. In 2026, the company intends to add a second Fold variant, referred to as a “Wide Fold,” featuring a wider aspect ratio. Reports indicate the new Fold will maintain dual 18:9 screens that, when unfolded, form an almost square 18:18 aspect ratio.

A source familiar with the project told the publication:

Samsung has shared plans for this model. Its launch is expected alongside the regular Flip and Fold series in the second half of 2026. While precise specifications are not yet finalized, details are likely to be confirmed internally by late September or early October.

Strategic Move in Response to Apple

The new Fold model is seen as a strategic response to Apple’s anticipated entry into the foldable segment. An industry insider commented, “Apple’s launch is expected to drive growth in the foldable segment. Considering the Galaxy Z Fold7’s performance this year, Samsung is expanding its lineup to maintain a competitive edge.”

Market Outlook

Market research firm Omdia projects foldable phones will account for roughly 2.2% of global smartphone sales in 2025, totaling 23.5 million units, and with Apple entering the market, this share is expected to rise to 4.4% by 2027, or 51.8 million units.

Samsung’s “double-folding” foldable phone, expected for release in November, may also be added to the lineup depending on market response, while the launch of additional models in 2026 has not yet been fully confirmed, the report noted.
