Samsung has officially shared a detailed breakdown of the engineering innovations behind its latest foldable smartphones — the Galaxy Z Fold7 and Galaxy Z Flip7 — launched earlier this month. Samsung states that these foldables are the thinnest and most refined they have produced so far.
Samsung’s Goal with Foldables
Since unveiling the first foldable smartphone in 2019, Samsung has maintained a consistent objective: to deliver large-screen experiences in devices that fit comfortably in the pocket.
With the Galaxy Z Fold7 and Z Flip7, Samsung says it has reached a new level of design and engineering precision, further advancing the foldable smartphone category.
Innovative Design Powering the Z Fold7 and Z Flip7
Compact and Efficient Designs
The Galaxy Z Flip7 measures 6.5 mm thick when open and 13.7 mm when closed, and the company attributes this slim design to two key improvements:

- Featuring a circuit board designed with ultra-high density to reduce wasted internal space.
- A redesigned battery that adds 300 mAh capacity while becoming thinner
By contrast, the Galaxy Z Fold7 has nearly halved its thickness compared to earlier models, now measuring 8.9 mm when folded and 4.2 mm when open. It also offers a wider and brighter display with an updated 21:9 aspect ratio that enhances ease of use.
Slimmer, Reinforced Hinges
The Fold7 is equipped with Samsung’s third-gen Armor FlexHinge, offering a thinner and lighter design. This is achieved through:

- Smaller rotating parts and new alloy materials that boost yield strength by more than 14%
- The separation of supporting and rotating components, enhancing the hinge’s overall stability

The hinge also includes a redesigned wingplate that allows the device to open wider and creates a flatter screen surface. Meanwhile, the Galaxy Z Flip7 incorporates Samsung’s slimmest FlexHinge to date, 29% thinner than that of the Flip6, while still supporting full FlexMode and ensuring daily durability.
Reduced Display Thickness and Improved Materials
Samsung has enhanced the displays on both foldables, focusing on making them thinner and more durable. For the Galaxy Z Fold7:

- Display thickness has been cut by more than 39% through a redesigned panel structure
- A titanium-based lattice replaces carbon fiber, boosting durability by 64%

Additionally, the Ultra Thin Glass (UTG) layer is now 50% thicker than on the Fold6, reducing crease visibility and strengthening the screen. With its edge-to-edge Infinity Cover Display, the Galaxy Z Flip7 removes the black notch and shrinks the bezel from 3.94 mm to just 1.25 mm—a 68% reduction—making it the slimmest bezel on any foldable screen globally.
Camera Hardware Optimization
Samsung redesigned the camera systems to deliver flagship-level quality while keeping the devices slim. For the Galaxy Z Fold7:

- It features the first-ever 200 MP wide-angle camera in a foldable smartphone
- A smaller actuator and revamped structure reduce the camera module size by 18% without losing image quality

The Galaxy Z Flip7’s camera was completely reengineered with a compact actuator to enable quick autofocus and high-quality photos within a slimmer design.
Upgraded Materials for Strength and Weight Reduction
To support the thinner designs, Samsung upgraded the materials:

- The Fold7’s cover screen uses Corning Gorilla Glass Ceramic 21, which is 30% stronger than previous glass
- For the frame and hinge housing, the device employs Advanced Armor Aluminum, which improves toughness by 10% compared to the Fold6.
Samsung’s Closing Perspective
Samsung states that every component—from hinges and displays to camera modules—was redesigned to deliver a foldable smartphone experience as seamless and dependable as any premium flagship. These advancements make the Galaxy Z Fold7 and Z Flip7 thinner, lighter, and more refined without compromising durability or performance.
The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold7 and Galaxy Z Flip7 are now available to pre-order globally, including India through online and offline retail stores.
