Garmin has rolled out the Google Maps app for free on its Connect IQ Store for compatible smartwatches. This lets users of select Venu, Forerunner, vívoactive, and fenix models receive simple, turn-by-turn directions right on their wrist.
How Google Maps Works on Garmin Watches
After entering a destination on Google Maps via an Android smartphone, users receive notifications on their Garmin smartwatch about upcoming turns while walking, running, or cycling.
- For pedestrians: The watch gently vibrates to alert users of upcoming turns, reducing the need to look at their phones—ideal when crossing streets or navigating crowds. Users can access the next three turns by tapping the app.
- For fitness enthusiasts: Users can record activities like walking, running, or cycling on their Garmin watch, tracking metrics such as distance and heart rate while still receiving turn alerts. After reaching their destination, activity data can sync from Garmin Connect to other Android health and fitness apps through Health Connect for enhanced tracking options.
