Threads adds private messaging and highlighter for trending posts

Meta has introduced two major updates to its Threads app: the ability to send direct messages (DMs) within the app and a new Threads Highlighter feature that draws attention to notable conversations.

Messaging on Threads

Threads was built for public, open conversations, but users have often requested a private messaging option, the company said. With this update, users can now send DMs within the app to continue discussions one-on-one.

To protect users, messaging is limited to those who follow you on Threads or are mutual Instagram followers aged 18 and over. Meta states that messaging is supported by its existing privacy policies, account protections, and safety systems.

Threads does not offer end-to-end encryption for DMs, meaning Meta could view message content if needed, unlike WhatsApp. Until encryption is added, users concerned about privacy may choose not to share sensitive information through Threads DMs.

Additional messaging features expected soon include:

  • Message controls: Manage who can send messages, including those who don’t follow you, with a separate folder for message requests.
  • Group messaging: Start conversations with multiple people at once.
  • Inbox filters: Organize and prioritize messages for easier access.
Threads Highlighter

The Highlighter feature on Threads spots and emphasizes posts that promote interesting viewpoints or discussions. It appears in content discovery areas and marks trending topics. Meta plans to expand its placement within the app over time.

Availability

Both the direct messaging feature and the Threads Highlighter are now available globally.

Announcing the updates, Meta posted:

As Threads moves into year three, we’re dedicated to supporting communities and creators, emphasizing fresh perspectives and maintaining an environment where conversations and communities thrive.
