Samsung is gearing up to begin mass production of its next foldable smartphones in May, including the Galaxy Z Fold 7, Galaxy Z Flip 7, and its first Fan Edition foldable — the Galaxy Z Flip 7 FE.
Production Plans and Volume Targets
According to a report from South Korea (sedaily), Samsung’s Mobile eXperience (MX) division will produce 240,000 units of the Galaxy Z Flip 7 and 170,000 units of the Galaxy Z Flip 7 FE in the second quarter of 2025. Production is set to take place at Samsung’s factories in Gumi, South Korea, and Vietnam.
The Galaxy Z Fold 7 will enter production with an initial batch of 160,000 units. The higher initial production numbers for the Z Flip 7 FE suggest it could launch in slightly higher volumes than the Z Fold 7, although the standard Z Flip 7 is expected to remain the most popular model.
New Color Options and Variants
The Z Fold 7 is expected to arrive in four color variants, with Coral Red being a possible addition. This color was previously seen on the Galaxy S25 lineup. It’s not yet confirmed which model will feature the Coral Red finish, but Samsung hasn’t offered a red option in the Flip lineup since the Z Flip 4 Bespoke Edition, which had limited availability.
Chipset Uncertainty: Exynos 2500 Under Review
A key aspect of Samsung’s upcoming foldables is the chipset that will power them. Samsung is in the final testing stages of the Exynos 2500, designed by its System LSI division and produced on a 3nm process.
While the Exynos 2500 was initially planned for the Galaxy S25, it was reportedly dropped due to performance issues. Now, Samsung is considering using the Exynos 2500 exclusively for the Galaxy Z Flip 7, instead of sharing the chipset supply with Qualcomm as in previous models.
If confirmed, this would mark the first time Samsung’s Exynos chips would be used in its foldable lineup. Currently, the Z Flip 6 uses Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Gen 3.
Broader Impact on Samsung’s Strategy
The success of the Exynos 2500 is critical for Samsung, especially after its System LSI and Foundry divisions reported a loss exceeding 2 trillion won in Q1. The adoption of the Exynos 2500 in flagship devices like the Z Flip 7 could have a significant impact on the future of Exynos 2600, a next-gen chip based on 2nm technology.
Launch Timeline
Samsung’s foldable phones are expected to launch around July, with production beginning in May. The launch will likely coincide with the company’s next Unpacked event, where further details and announcements are anticipated.
