Google Authenticator gets Google Account synchronization

Google has introduced a new feature to Google Authenticator, which enables Google Account synchronization on both iOS and Android platforms.

With this new functionality, users can now securely back up their one-time codes, also referred to as one-time passwords or OTPs, to their Google Account.

Google’s Built-in Authentication Tools and Automatic Protections

Google has made signing in to Google and other apps and services more secure and straightforward with its built-in authentication tools, such as Google Password Manager and Sign in with Google. The company also provides automatic protections, like alerts when someone accesses your Google Account from a new device.

While Google is working towards a passwordless future, authentication codes remain a significant aspect of internet security. Therefore, Google has continued to make optimizations to the Google Authenticator app to enhance its functionality. Google unified web and app Password Manager in an update last year.

Since its release in 2010, users have provided feedback about Google Authenticator, with many users finding it challenging to deal with lost or stolen devices that had Google Authenticator installed. As one-time codes in Authenticator were only stored on a single device, losing the device meant losing the ability to sign in to any service set up with 2FA using Authenticator.

The Benefits of Google Account Synchronization

With the new Google Account synchronization feature, users can store their one-time codes securely in their Google Account. This update makes one-time codes more durable, protecting users from lockouts and increasing convenience and security.

Google’s Multiple Options for Secure Authentication

Google provides various secure authentication options, such as Google Password Manager, Sign in with Google, and passkeys, in collaboration with industry partners and the FIDO Alliance. These options offer users both convenience and security when signing in to websites and apps.

Availability

To experience the new Google Authenticator with Google Account synchronization, all you need to do is update the app from either the Google Play Store or the App Store and then follow the on-screen prompts.

Speaking on the announcement, Christiaan Brand, Group Product Manager, said:

We want our technology to serve everyone and keep them safe. That’s why we create and share web solutions that are easy and secure for users and developers alike.
