India smartphone market records 12% YoY decline in Q3 2021, shipped 48 million units: IDC

The International Data Corporation (IDC) has released their quarterly India smartphone market report for the third quarter of 2021. According to it, the market declined 12% YoY after 4 quarters of continuous growth, shipping a total of 48 million units. The top 5 manufacturers were Xiaomi, Samsung, vivo, realme and OPPO.

Xiaomi continued their lead in the market even though its shipment declined by 17% YoY. The POCO sub-brand in particular had a strong quarter of 65% YoY. The most popular models were Redmi 9 series, Note 10 series, the POCO M3 and POCO C3.

Samsung continued to be in the second place, although it declined 33% YoY. It shipped a total of 8.1 million units, and the majority of shipments came from the Galaxy M and F series smartphones. vivo came in third place with a shipment decline of 13% YoY, and its offline market share was 30%.

realme took 4th place with 5.3% YoY decline and OPPO came in 5th place with 16.4% YoY decline. In related news, India is currently the third-largest  market for 5G smartphones, and in Q3 2021, the OnePlus Nord CE, iPhone 12, and Galaxy A22 were the most popular 5G models.

Commenting on the report, Navkendar Singh, Research Director, Client Devices & IPDS, IDC India said:

The first nine months of the year (Jan-Sep’21) already shipped 120 million units, with 1H21 clocking 42% YoY growth. Due to supply challenges, 4Q21 is expected to see a decline, resulting in annual shipments below 160 million in 2021. The first half of 2022 will remain challenging, with some easing out expected in the latter half of 2022. Vendors/channels will keep an eye on the over-stocking situation in case demand stays limited due to the price hikes by the suppliers and vendors.
