Apple iPad Air with OLED display reportedly cancelled due to quality and costs concerns

Apple has reportedly cancelled their plans to launch a new iPad Air with an OLED display according to Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo. The company was earlier predicted to be developing an OLED iPad Air, however it is no longer the case due to costs and performance concerns.

Back in March, Ming-Chi Kuo released a note that expected Apple to release a new iPad Air model that featured a OLED panel in 2022. Till date, the iPad Air has always used an LCD panel. The advantages of an OLED panel over LCD panel are the improved contrast, deeper blacks and higher peak brightness.

In his latest note, Ming-Chi Kuo talks about Apple’s concerns over the cost and quality of the iPad Air’s OLED panels, and as a result, the company has cancelled the development for now.

Earlier this year, Apple updated their 12.9-inch iPad Pro display with Mini-LED technology, which is far better than regular edge-lit LCD panels. Apple may introduce Mini-LED technology for the 11-inch iPad too, which could be another reason why they decided to ditch OLED panel technology for the iPad Air.
