Google is not responsible for the Nexus smartphones when it comes to manufacturing and design. However, a new report from The Telegraph says the company is set to release own branded smartphone by the end of this year.

Google is taking such a move in a bid to gain more control over its mobile software and compete directly with Apple’s iPhone. The company is in talks with mobile operators for the same. With own branded smartphones, Google wants to take more control over the design, manufacturing and software of the handset. Currently, Google has teamed up with manufacturers like Samsung, LG, HTC and Huawei for its Nexus program.

There are no details about the specifications of the handset as of now. The latest news comes after CEO Sundar Pichai recently said that Google would be more “opinionated” about designs.

One of the main reasons Google wants to release an own branded phone, is because it is worried about the current Android fragmentation and believes that it needs to be controlled. Last month, the company announced that it will list the Android device makers that are delaying updates.
