Google Camera v3.2 might get RAW support

Google is tipped to add an important feature to its Camera app. It has surfaced that Google is working on bringing support for RAW photos for next update that bumps the app to v3.2.

Android Police did a teardown of the Google Camera update which showed that the app will let you save photos in both RAW and JPEG format. This feature is present on professional cameras and high-end smartphones.

However, support for RAW images will not be available for all phones and will be exclusive to Nexus devices. The code strings showed that shooting in RAW is possible with active HDR+ mode which debuted with Nexus 5 and is now present on Nexus 6, Nexus 5x and Nexus 6P. However, it looks like there is no option to save just a standalone RAW image as most gallery apps don’t support the file format. Also, RAW images are heavy in size compared to JPEG as they are not processed.

Earlier this year, we have seen Adobe bring RAW support for Lightroom apps and OnePlus 2 also received the same feature for OnePlus camera.
