Google Translate expands instant visual translation support to 20 additional languages

Google Translate New Languages

Google Translate is a veritable part of your travel arsenal as you try to navigate the labyrinthine pathways of a foreign language while on a vacation. Visual translation in particular is a particularly useful tool for a quick way to overlay translated text over the original, remove language related barriers. The app has so far offered visual translation services for about 7 languages. This is all set to be expanded to 20 additional languages which will bring the total to 27 supported languages.

While the original application started out with supporting English, French, German, Italian, Portuguese, Russian and Spanish, the new update adds 20 more which have been listed below.

  1. Bulgarian
  2. Catalan
  3. Croatian
  4. Czech
  5. Danish
  6. Dutch
  7. Filipino
  8. Finnish
  9. Hungarian
  10. Indonesian
  11. Lithuanian
  12. Norwegian
  13. Polish
  14. Romanian
  15. Slovak
  16. Swedish
  17. Turkish
  18. Ukrainian
  19. Hindi
  20. Thai

Worth noting is that for Hindi & Thai, instant visual translation works only for a one way translation from English to the native language. You can however snap a photograph and use that for translation in which case the application supports 37 languages. To try out the additional languages, you’ll need to download a language pack for each language. Head over to the Google Translate app, tap English as well as as the language to be translated and then tap the camera button. This will prompt you to download the language pack and will let you do an instant visual translation. The update will be heading over to both iOS and Android over the next few days.
