Microsoft rolling out firmware update to enable 4G support for some Lumia phones in India

Microsoft India is currently rolling out a minor software update to select Lumia devices to support 4G LTE networks. As Airtel continues to roll out its 4G service across the country Microsoft saw the need to enable 4G radios on devices which have the functionality built into the hardware but lacked the necessary software. So if you are using a Microsoft or Nokia Lumia device which has support for 4G globally, you should update your device to make the jump to 4G.
The devices which are getting the update :-

  • Lumia 1520
  • Lumia 1320
  • Lumia 1020
  • Lumia 930
  • Lumia 925
  • Lumia 920
  • Lumia 830
  • Lumia 625

In case you are using a Lumia device purchased outside India , it might have the support already like I noticed with my AT&T Lumia 1520 and Lumia 930.Only catch is most devices will support only the FDD-LTE (1800MHz) Band 3 and not the TDD-LTE 2300MHz Band 40 due to technical limitations of old hardware. With respect to future device launches , they are expected to come with full support for 4G networks out of the box.

Let us know if you are seeing the update. We will be updating the post with more information shortly.
