Gionee Marathon M5 Hands On

Gionee announced the Marathon M5, the latest smartphone in the M series with a whopping 6020mAh battery at an event in Beijing few hours back. We managed to get our hands on the smartphone, here is a quick look at the hardware.

The Marathon M5 has a 5.5-inch (1280 x 720 pixels) HD Super AMOLED Plus display and a 5MP front-facing camera with 84-degree wide-angle lens. It is powered by a 1.5 GHz quad-core MediaTek MT6735 64-bit processor with Mali-T720 GPU and has 2GB of RAM. The smartphone feels good to hold. It runs on Android 5.1 (Lollipop) with Amigo UI 3.1 on top.

It has a metal frame and is just 8.5mm thick, even though it packs a huge battery. The volume rockers and a power button are present on the right side. It weighs 214 grams, mainly due to the battery.

Dual SIM slots and a microSD card slot are present on either sides of the smartphone. Both the SIM cards support 4G. It has 16GB of internal memory.

On the top there is a 3.5mm audio jack and what looks like an infrared LED.

On the bottom there is a micro USB slot and a primary microphone.

There is a 13-megapixel camera on the back with single LED Flash, 5P lenses and 1080p video recording. There is a secondary microphone as well. The back has a mixture of metal and plastic finish. Under the sealed back cover there is a 6020mAh battery. The smartphone can also be used to charge other devices.

Even though the back cover is not removable, Gionee had displayed the battery inside the smartphone, which comprises of two 3010mAh battery cells. At the event Gionee said that the smartphone will offer up to 62 hours of standby even if it has only 5% of power left. It also said that fast dual charging chips in the phone will offer 2 hours and 26 minutes of talk time with just 5 minutes of charge and a 30 minute charge will give it one day of usage. It will offer 2 days of battery life with heavy use and up to 4 days of battery life with average use, said the company.

The Gionee Marathon M5 comes in Black, White and Gold colors, costs 2299 RMB or about Rs. 23700 and will go on sale in China from June 25th. Gionee has not revealed when the smartphone will launch in India.
