The report states that Google has been working on this project for more than two years. The drone by Google is a small hybrid between a plane and a helicopter that delivers items to people by dropping them down on a line.  These drones was recently tested in Australia where the researchers used prototypes of the automated vehicles to deliver “candy bars, dog treats, cattle vaccines, water, radios, and more” to two farmers.

“Self-flying vehicles could open up entirely new approaches to moving goods –- including options that are cheaper, faster, less wasteful and more environmentally sensitive than what’s possible today. Before we develop our system, we want to go out and learn about more situations in which aerial delivery could help people in their daily lives and jobs.”

said Google.

Project Wing founder Nicholas Roy said Google is “years” away from delivering an actual product, but there has been enough progress for the company to provide the public with a sneak peek. Google says that it’s number one focus with Project Wing is not necessarily shipping goods to your average customer, but is rather using the drones in times of disaster relief. In the case of natural disasters that make cities nearly inaccessible, Google’s drones could deliver necessary supplies to residents.
