Yahoo acquires secret mobile messaging app Blink

Blink

Yahoo has made yet another acquisition, this time it has gone after one of the current hottest markets, mobile messaging. The company has scooped up self-destructing message service Blink for an undisclosed sum.

Available on Android and iOS, Blink allows users to send texts, pictures, and audio that self-destruct similar to the popular established app Snapchat. The Blink app is a product of Meh Labs which was founded by former Google employees Kevin Stephens and Michelle Norgan. Blink’s team of seven including the two founders will join Yahoo as a result of the acquisition. Also the Android and iOS apps of Blink will shut down.

We’re excited to announce that as of May 13, 2014 Blink is joining Yahoo! We built Blink because we believe everyone should be free to show the same honesty and spontaneity in their online conversations as they can in person. We look forward to the possibilities that will come from bringing the Blink vision to Yahoo.

posted Blink on it official blog.

Blink is a competitor to Snapchat, which recently added instant messaging and video chat and newer apps like Confide and Wick. Yahoo has reportedly bought 40 start-ups since chief executive Marissa Mayer took over two years ago in an attempt to revamp the internet company. Last week, Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer said that Yahoo mobile traffic will exceed that of its desktop by end of this year.
