MediaTek introduces Pump Express fast-charging technology for smartphones and tablets

MediaTek

MediaTek has announced Pump Express fast-charging technology for smartphones and tablets. This is a system-on-a-chip (SOC) and DC wall charger technology to make battery recharge time quicker on smartphones and tablets. This reduces charging time by half or by up to 50%, says MediaTek.

Qualcomm introduced a similar feature called Quick Charge, and the Quick Charge 2.0 present in the latest Qualcomm-powered smart devices lets these devices charge up to 75% faster.

Highlights of Pump Express technology

  • Allows DC wall charger to determine the initial voltage required to recharge the battery, based on its current charge.
  • Voltage is then gradually increased to up to 5V to maximize the charging current
  • Pump Express for DC wall chargers with an output of less than 10W (5V)
  • Pump Express Plus for chargers with an output of 15W or more (up to 12V)

Select MediaTek smartphone and tablet SoCs already support fast-charging technology, and the Pump Express technology is available on all MediaTek’s mobile SOCs. It is expected to be available in commercial devices by the first half of 2014.
