what about iphone 3G? how much will be the price of iphone 3G 8 GB as the 3G S is not a worthy successor to 3G, many people would instead go for iphone 3G with reduced price.

Forget about price of iPhone 3GS I’m more worried about special tariff plan for iPhones. They are very expensive why people pay so much rental and very high call charge when there is no subsidy from Airtel & Vodafone India.

@hrishikesh – The iPhone 3G has been pulled off the shelf Vodafone and Airtel. Supplies are limited but most stores have sent them back. As far as buying it internationally, well you must know that if you desire push notifications, you must have an officially activated iPhone. There is a hack available that allows this loophole to be exploited but who can know whether apple will fix that in their upcoming 3.1/3.0.1 update. So my suggestion would be bite the tongue and buy it officially. You will also be getting support on the device. Airtel hopefully will be giving the free GPRS as they are doing so now. Vodafone’s iPhone GPRS APN is horrible, you will see idle drops, which means PUSH is a NO GO after 30-60 minutes of your phone sitting IDLE.

@hrishikesh, @drew Apple could have gained some foothold in India with a reduced priced Iphone 3g, would they be out of stock of it already?
Iphone 3G could have been a handsome buy at around 20-25k.

By looking of launch date of IPhone 3G and 3GS in various countries it happens on Friday weekend and not on sundays so in India also, 3GS launch will be on 7 August than might be on 9th.

Earlier 3G model launched india on Friday 22 August, so this time it will launch on weekend.

iPhone is certainly the cheapest in India compared to rest of the world. Unlocked iPhone is costing 575Euros in Belgium and 615Euros in Italy. It is costing around 750Euros in Netherlands with 2 year contract. Only difference in Netherlands is that u pay that 750Euros over a period of 2 years.

Compared to those prices, It is pretty cheap in India. Currently I am in Europe. I found all these details personally and decided to wait for 3gs in India. 32k means around just 500 Euros.

Difference between Unlocked phones of Belgium, Italy and locked iPhones of India is around 75 Euros. But.. we only get local warranty for iPhone so if we buy in Italy then u would only get warranty in Italy.

Those who are working on iPhone development can buy the officially unlocked iPhones from Belgium and Italy. They can install any version of iPhone OS and can test anything on it. Otherwise it is not of much use for normal users like us.

By the way,
iPhone 3GS is certainly worth of 32k but it can not be used to its full capacity in India.
we don’t have 3G access in all the major cities yet.
We are not used to Tomtoms or any other gps yet.
Majority of the crowd in India is not used to Internet browsing/ Emails on mobile except corporate crowd.
and List goes on..
operating temperature is between 0 to 35 degrees.

Overall, great gadget in worst conditions.
It is only targeted for specific crowd who either want to keep it in their pocket for brand or power users who will have wireless internet access in Offices and use gprs or home wireless.
So, 11000 iPhones which were sold in a year is not a bad number.

Even after excluding those features, iPhone still deserves a buy rating.

Most probably the iPhone 3G (8 GB) will return at a price-point of around Rs. 25000 once the 3GS is launched.

@OM- Your absolutely right Om. People think that the peice is cheap around the world. But no less than $800 which is the minimum n US for unlocked one.Only by signing a 2-year contract, you get it for a less price.

I got my 32GB white from US for 757$ please note that this a Locked phone phone but without AT&T contarct.

Just 4 days after I got iphone 3gs was selling unlocked in HongKong for Rs 39,700 32GB

I dont know how the old 3G is not getting reflected in HongKong and in India.

I unlocked the 3GS in 20 mins.

Awesome phone the new unlocks softwares are better so if you have unlocked using older version of UltraSnow , try the newer one and also the purple snow.

I hope they start selling unlocked in India hate this locked concept.

Apple and the hackers are always in a cat and mouse game. We get jacked in between.

Jailbreak is not a problem for hackers the unlock is .

Hey All, The iphone would cost around 380000 in India. If you can get a hold of one from U.S or any other countries, you can easily first jailbreak it and then unlock through downloading a software through cydia. I can get a iphone for $799 without a contract as they are selling it at apple store or u just buy it through your wireless company. The unlock does not disfunctions any features and work like a locked one. As far problems with itunes are concerned, if you find any errors or if the phone is not connecting with new itunes. What one can do is downlaod the older version of itunes and it will sure work.

I have the same question as Hari. How much is the Locked and Unlocked iPhone 3G in India? I am presently in Bangkok.. coming to india soon. A lot of Unlocked NEW iPhones (from HK) are available here, 3G costs about Rs 29,000. Is it worth buying it here or should i buy it in India?

its not AS costlier than the US my friend. In the US, the price is subsidised by AT&T ONLY you qualify for their subsidized rates. Else you pay the full price!! In anycase, even if you get a subisdised rate and unlock ur fone, ur warranty goes + you have to continue paying AT&T rental or a deactivation fee of about $175.

You must remember, that imported cellphones carry a high rate of duty which jacks up the price. Add to that the GREED of the 2 telecom giants!!

Ofcourse somebody can file a report under the MRTP Act, & with TRAI, but who really cares/has time ?? thats why both the companies are happily charging a price they want.

You shall be able to use all features the phone has to offer except for 3G when in India.

Hopefully we should see the ads by Airtel and Voda sometime this week if its to be launched on this Sunday!!

just like earlier, both companies are waiting for the other – to see the pricing and strategy deployed by the other respectively. The person who announce second is at an advantage as they can align their prices according to the first player!!!

I own a 2G iphone & didnt bother upgrading to the 3G but now im definitely getting the 16GB 3GS. I dont think you should worry about apps. The iphone handles everything better than the storm including email. I hope you know the storm uses a “click screen” Forget the Storm..

I would wait. Yeah and iphone would be best with a Mac. Blackberry is yet to release a full blown app for Macs.

I am just gettin impatient day by day.. I read articles saying Iphone 3gs is releasin on aug 9th. I’ve been waitin for the price of Iphone 3g to go down here in India. But I am not seeing any posters or advertisements regarding the release of the next Iphone. Its really annoying to search daily in the web ( regarding the new Iphone ) and get the same results. Apple confirmed that the new Iphone is releasin in Aug. Any confirmed news regarding this?? And I badly need an Iphone 3g. Just tell me the best and the cheapest way to get it if not here in India. Well 2 months is what the airtel shop dude said very doubtfully, did not believe him though. i am in chennai, and have delayed buying the iphone only due to the 3GS, and i am particular about brand and quality, thats why was asking about istore or service provider? the istore was also saying i could buy it there.

Apple has not stopped producing the 3G, they have cut down production by 1/3. Unless you work for apple’s sourcing team its a good guess!!

warranty is available only with phones bought through official channels. although its doesn’t really matter as you cant extend it beyond 1yr in anycase!! both my iphone 2gs obviously dont have warranty and working alright. if ur not a techie you might wanna keep it though!

I think the telco’s spent allota money last time on marketing but it all blew up in their faces, so they probably don’t want to create any hype which also reflects their price points. To them its just an additional source of income and not the primary source unlike that of ATT.

@ Maru : Well No i don’t work for apple, but yes i am pretty sure that it has stopped , and they are simply clearing their excess stock, read it at many places, but then again you may be correct.

Well IF the 3GS is being launched on the 9th there might be a good chance it launches in India on the same.
I spoke to an apple dealer here i kolkata and a grey market dealer both said that the iphone was supposed t launch on the 9th but it MAY be delayed due to stock issues to around 14th,15th.

I dont get one thing tho, how does the limited stock factor in the states affect India ??

Till i know the iphone supplied to India is produced in China, and at a different place (not sure where) for America and UK

i really get pumped up when someone confidently mentions its going to be launched on 9th of August..I Hooooopppeee it does and wouldnt mind waiting at the store the whole day on 8th to be the first person to get it..man, why in heaven doesnt any of the companies (Airtel, Vodafone) publish some information. They are playing the waiting game i guess to see what is the pricing strategy that the other one goes adopts. Why can they both just decide on one price and get 50-50 stake in the market of 3gs, coz its for sure that none of these guys would be able to meet the demand by themselves.

@ Shivam, As someone has mentioned earlier in a comment.. Launching a product at the end of the weekend rather than its start doesn’t seem to be rationale! Last year it was a Fri if im not mistaken.

Apple supplies the Globe from contracted suppliers in China. There is only so much that can be produced per day. So you need enough to be able to introduce it in a market.

Well obviously the reputed mobile shop in Ahmedabad is not uptodate with his info on iphone 3gs!!!!!

Ive just got word from a senior vodafone executive in Kerala, that theyve taken the 3G off-shelves “for the moment” and expect to hear from the Corporate office about the 3GS in the next 10 days. The stock-out would be in line with apple strategy. This was done in the US as well just few weeks prior to the 3GS’s launch. Clearly the #gs is a few weeks away at most!!

I just managed to call up the Istore and got myself to speak with a sales person. When I asked him regarding the iphone 3gs launch date, he said it would be in the 1st week of september. He also stated that, they would recieve the stocks by the end of this month.
He had no say on wat the prices would be. When i questioned him regarding the price of the Iphone 3g ( after the release of Iphone 3GS ), he again had no clue. But he promised that Iphone 3g ( 8gb model ) would be sold even after the release of Iphone 3GS. I am not sure whether this is true, but this is the story with the case of other countries. I heard rumours stating Iphone 3g would be sold only till stocks last and once the 3gs is launched, production of 3g would be stopped. Any expert opinion about this please ???? Thanks in advance,

I think we should give Apple India the same respect that it gives us ….and simply ignore them.
It will come when it has to come …and the cost factor will continue to make it a niche product! My guess is that apart from a few diehard fans (like on Fonearena..) the rest of “value for money” conscious Indians will continue to ignore 3gs.

Vivo confirms 28 August launch of iPhone 3GS

Vivo has announced on its blog and Twitter page it will start selling the iPhone 3GS in Brazil on 28 August. The company did not reveal the price of the devices nor the available packages. Besides Vivo, Claro and TIM will also sell Apple’s mobile phone. In Canada it will cost you around $850 (32GB). without contract but locked.

I just got to know from a friend whose bro is a circle head at Vodafone, it seems they were planning a launch in Aug End but its been postpone indefinitely. This seems to be true since Apple had planned a rollout in several countries including India, but its not launched anywhere.

Personally, theres no point in me buying one after mid-october.. coz then your 7 months away from a new iphone generation!

Its good to know that Apple has tried to mend the mess that created by Iphone 3G last year…buying iphone at over 30k without great feaures was poor idea…thanks to Apple.as it has added some features to its new iphone 3GS..still I would buy nokia phone with much more feautures at less then half the price of iphone 3GS and would buy notebook with remaining money…the price of new iphone should not have been more than 22k…it seems Apple has not studied the taste of India..poor luck Apple..

This post is sort of “off-topic”. So please excuse me as I really need some help and have no other option. I hope someone helps me out. Ok here’s the thing….

I have my friend in the UK right now. He is touring europe and will finally touch london before landing here. I heard O2 ( a network provider in UK ) is selling the Iphone in Pay & Go plans ( prepaid ). All I want to know is if he can get the handset from the apple store without being questioned as to whether he is a tourist.
I read in the apple website under ” What to bring when buying iphone ” (http://www.apple.com/uk/retail/iphone/) , that you need a uk registered debit card or credit card. What if he pays for the handset by cash? Will he be denied the right to buy an Iphone if they find out that he is not a resident of uk?? Please someone help me out if you have any idea. Sorry if this seems to be a stupid question. Thanks in advance.

the phone is available thru carphone warehouse in the UK, but its gonna be very expensive to buy from there. a 16gb iphone 3gs would cost somewhere around 500pounds. also 3gs is currently unavailable for pay as you go due to huge demands. Also there is credit check done before they give the handset.

i would advise you to wait till its launched here.

The whole world agrees that the htc hero is the only real competitor to the iphone 3gs.
its as fast. has an awesome interface, and is customisable.
The only thing it lacks is the sheer number of apps available for iphone.
it was sluggish at first, but then they launched a software update that fixed that.
bad news though is that even the hero won’t launch before october.
so yeah they’ll both be launching close to each other.
so if you prefer iphone don’t buy the hero

The interface is just bad. the symbian and the crappy touchscreen feels prehistoric compared to iphone 3gs and htc hero.
I think for people who want a phone immediately, hey should go for htc magic. which is also an android phone.
only thing bad with it is that it doesn’t have a 3.5 headphone jack, only micro usb.
pretty good otherwise.
some may like a blackberry, but thats a business phone, definitely not in the same category. also don’t buy the storm, it sux. storm 2 may be better.

Is anyone counting? Today is September 26th and there is no sign of iphone 3gs in India (through Airtel or Vodafone) from Apple. No one knows. Amazingly, no real information from Google searchers either. Every now and then, some trigger happy members of this forum keys in a rumor or two about the next possible lauch date. Five such predications have come and gone not to mention the major correction about aug 2009 being confused as 9th august. And then nothing happened again!

I am frustrated mainly with Apple, Airtel and Vodafone for not uttering a word about them going back on their earlier talk about August release in India. An apology would have been fine. But, Apple does not care about India market, I suppose. Somewhere I read that their priority is make sure there are enough supplies for the US consumers first and they are actually not able meet the current demand. Good for a company, I guess. Lets buy Apple stock instead

And please, do not I repeat do not guess or spread rumors about when the next launch date for 3GS going to be. I would rather hear it from the official channels.

Just picked up the new HTC Hero with Google’s Android.

Getting used to a new GUI after 2 years of iphone 2g took me about 2 days.. but now im totally satisfied with it. You dont NEED to jailbreak it coz its open-source!! You can do what you want with the software and theres tonnes of apps for it.

There is no need to wait for iphone 3gs, HTC HD2 is coming to india in Nov 2009, which is better than iphone in various aspects,

While the phone is coming in November you still WRONG. Its a windows mobile phone. i.e. its BS. period.

Instead, review the HTC Hero – Google Android OS. The upcoming Sony Experia on Android. I have the Hero, and im glad i didnt bother waiting for the 3GS. Initially it took time from the 2G but this is way better. You can integrate some/all contact from facebook to your phonebook contacts, its picks the photo and birthday and anniver. Does the iphone do that? Its got widgets!! Windows has krappy ones.

For now, Android is the way ahead. Motorola is launching a new device on android. So is Verizon. so are many others.

Although the 16gb 3gs is mentioned at 599$ in USA , in reality add 200$ more to it as a tax.Then the US costs 599+200=799$. Thailand costs some 45000rs, New Zealand costs 1150$[don't know whether tax is inclusive or not]. Even the second hand i http://www.ebay.in retails at the average of 50,000rs.Just for your information!

This is all baseless information. How did he confirm from vodafone or airtel I dont know. I spoke to both vodafone and airtel people as few of them are my friends. There is no as such confirmation. Even Apple 3G is not available now.

I purchased 1 chinese mobile of double sim, from this shop.
At purchasing time, I checked camera, mp4 player, and 1 sim, (generally
everyone checks 1 sim only) and all 3 items were okay.
But they cheated me by not telling the defect of the mobile. The 2nd sim slot was not working and I came to know about this defect when I purchased the 2nd number and used 2nd sim in this mobile. It was not working.

When I contacted them and said them to exchange this phone with other, they refused. (I know in case of Chinese phone, money is never refunded).

Therefore, suggesting not to purchase any phone from this shop.

I went to the Apple Premium store in Atria Mall, Worli, Mumbai and got to know that iphone 3GS would not be sold through Vodafone or Airtel and that the sale of iphone 3G also is stopped through that channel. its has lot of features, and you can have more apps which U want.
Currently I am in Canada, this week apple has new download application security, as you are not supposed to use it from out of country. as for India or Asia, they have plans in rupees, so looks like to me, things will take time, and its very close to launch, as I can see some Indian applications on apple, and they are in doller price, Apple is making tonnes of money, some other companies are also coming into this .. for apps you can look into apple online store for iphone…

I am using it from last two months, but now I am realized, I did mistake, as Apple guys are big cheaters.
They are taking your hard money and giving you the phone,
After that they are keeping an eye on you all the time, like which application you are loading and tones of restraction in Safari(IE).
You are not suppose do download lot of things, and all blocked, which is killing and frustrating thing.
If you had paid for cell you can deal with it with your own way, but no, sorry to say you need to break the law, and do the jailbreak to make the changes into it. if you guys are ready then go for it, otherwise explore other things, don’t go in this trap…

I belive google’s nexus one is getting released coming 5th Jan in US. Should be a worthy competitor as it runs on a 1Ghz Snapdragon processor like the HTC HD2. Good part is Google is also selling unlocked versions without any contract.

So, even if someone could get it from US, you dont have to go through the pain of unlocking it. Should be around 27000 rupees as per initial information.

Just went to an Airtel and Vodafone outlet in 100ft road , Indiranagar , Bangalore . Both the companies have stopped registration of Iphone 3g. They are awaiting stock of 3GS . But the Airtel employee said ” Sir, The date of launch was supposed to be August 2009 , then extended to october , nov .. so on .. As of now we have been informed that in Feb 2010 we will be launching the phone , but this cannot be confirmed” . Vodafone refused to comment on the launch date of 3gs . All they said was they are out of stock on 3G.
Lets wait n watch until Feb 2010 for the bitten Apple.

@The diehardfan , Airtel and Vodafone do not have any stock left of the 3g. Vodafone has been kinda open about it on their website and not airtel. The only stock that you will find is with the retailers. The latest date they are saying is Mid Feb it should launch , but going by the past experience you never know if they delay it again.

also ensure that during unlocking they dont use a Mac Lapotp to unlock. Mac Laptops write a hard code on the ROM of the phone that is difficult to erase ( requires hardware reset).

The problem is not only with your phone but its with most of the phones which are brought from abroad ,These handsets cannot be unlocked completely as the unlocking software for 3.1.2 version is not yet launched in india ,See to that is you adjust with it for few more months as the software for JAilBreaking and unlocking for 3.1.2 will be released soon in India . If you want to unlock the IPhone than you can do it online by paying on pay pal and getting your iphone unlockd .

I agree 3G spectrum has just been launched by BSNL and there’s no plan with unlimited bandwidth (as cmopared to ATnT in US), so there’s not much use even with 3G.

Secondly the ‘s’ in 3GS isn’t related to the spectrum. 3GS is launched as a better version of 3G. Am an apple geek since ages, I have benchmarked all, 2G, 3G and 3GS phones. Trust me, the apps on 3GS open up twice as faster. And before you comlpain I am not talking of apps which are 5-10-15 MBs. I am talking apps which are over 200 MB’s like NFS or 2Fast2Furious etc.

These take a while to load up on a 3G/2G phone but on 3GS they load up very quickly. Plus everything in 3GS is handfree. You can train the ipHone to virtually call up any of ur friends, or play any song etc etc. Its all about how much you explore your iPhone….

Coming to apps…..the reason I bought an iPhone was because of the third party apps and the variety of apps. There are sooo many apps launched everyday, some of which always have some or the other thing exciting… I’ve never gotten bored of my iPhone….at least not till now…. The apps and games and music keep me way too busy

So buying a 3GS isn’t a complete waste, you prolly need to research some more to realize the real power of 3GS. After all Jobs has donea good job

After months of waiting, the iPhone 3GS has finally landed in India. While Airtel did announce last week that they are launching the iPhone in the country, they hadn’t revealed price details of the handset.

Well, that was two days ago. We now have the pricing details of the iPhone 3GS in India revealed a few hours ago. Apparently, the older 8GB 3G version of the iPhone will continue to be sold here at a price of Rs. 29,500. The 16GB 3GS will set you back by a cool Rs. 35,500 while the top-end, 32GB iPhone 3GS will cost an outrageous 41,500 in India. These will be available in India from from March 26.

Airtel also has a data plan for iPhone users (the handsets will be locked to the Airtel network) that will give the 500MB of free data every month for an entire year (starting from the date of activation).

You can purchase the iPhone 3GS from an Airtel authorized retail stores across India starting March 26. Head to the iPhone 3GS Airtel website here for more information.

The country’s largest mobile operator by subscriber base, Bharti Airtel, on Wednesday said it will sell Apple’s iPhone 3GS in the country from March 26.

The handset will be priced at Rs. 35,500 for the 16 GB model and Rs. 41,500 for the 32GB model, Bharti Airtel said in a statement.

Additionally, iPhone 3G continues to be available in the 8GB version for Rs. 29,500, it added.

Equipped with a longer battery life, the handset has a three-megapixel autofocus camera, allows video recording and hands free voice control.

Apple’s App Store provides access to more than 1.5 lakh applications across games, social networking, financial planning and health management. iPhone is now available in over 80 countries around the world.

“We are delighted with the opportunity to bring the eagerly-awaited iPhone 3GS to India. Combining the strength of the Airtel brand and network with the great user interface of iPhone 3GS, we are happy to bring to our customers an experience that will take mobile communications to a whole new level,” Bharti Airtel President (Mobile Services) Atul Bindal said.

Customers of iPhone 3GS will get 500 MB of free data every month for a year from the date of activation, it said.

Bharti Airtel has already submitted its bid in a bandwidth auction for third generation, or 3G, mobile telephony services in India and successful bidders would be allowed to offer 3G services on a commercial basis by the end of this year.

The touch screen catches the eye and you’ll be blown away by its explicit quality,it has seriously exceeded my expectations. Certainly superior in terms of touch screen response and it has awesome email and video apps. I believe the specification is arguable the highlight of this i- phone. I wish if they would added radio to it as well, however, I would heartily recommend this.
