Apple is said to be working on custom ARM-based chips for future Mac laptops, according to a latest report from Bloomberg. These chips could boost battery life on the Mac and also help to reduce the dependence on the Intel chips.

The chip is internally codenamed as T310 and it would handle some of the computer’s low-power mode functionality, added the report. It is said to be a variant of the T1 SoC Apple first introduced on the recently released TouchBar MacBook Pro. The ARM-based chip will offload Mac’s “Power Nap” features such as receiving email; syncing data in apps like Calendar, Contacts, Reminders, and Notes; software updates; and more, from the standard Intel processor as a way to save batter life.

The T1 is dedicated to the Touch Bar, but the T310, according to Gurman and King’s sources, would have more integration with other hardware components, such as storage and wireless components. The report says that the new chip might be introduced in an upgraded MacBook Pro which is tipped to slated be for later this year.
