Nothing OS 5.0 update rolls out starting with Nothing Phone (3)

Nothing has begun the general rollout of Nothing OS 5.0, its latest major software upgrade after the announcement back in August. Built on Android 17, the update introduces more than 80 changes covering user interface design, personalisation, system performance, and integrated AI capabilities.

Key Additions in the General Release

Building on features tested during the Open Beta cycle, the stable release introduces several new interface and utility updates:

  • Redesigned Home Screen: Incorporates transparent design accents across system widgets and the search bar, paired with an adaptive colour system that samples wallpaper tones to unify the visual theme.
  • Micrographics Lock Screen Clock: A hardware-inspired clock face that consolidates the date, time, current weather conditions, and upcoming calendar appointments into a single glanceable layout.
  • Essential Space Updates: Performance and feature updates for Essential Space will be distributed concurrently via Google Play alongside the OS deployment.
Consolidated Changes from the Beta Cycle

Nothing OS 5.0 integrates a broad set of enhancements refined during the earlier beta testing phase:

Category Key Changes
Visual Design Introduction of the Geist typeface, refined spacing, updated iconography, and modernized animations across the status bar, Settings, Camera, and Gallery.
Personalisation Support for batch-moving apps and widgets on the home screen; new widgets including Collector (for curating visual object sets) and Away Time (for monitoring screen-free intervals).
Performance Optimized background memory retention, enhanced touch responsiveness, reduced resource draw, and smoother transitions across multitasking and folder interactions.
Essential AI Faster, cleaner speech transcription via Essential Voice; Smart Collections within Essential Space; and Essential Apps Builder, an on-device utility allowing users to generate and deploy custom AI mini-apps using natural language prompts.
Android 17 Foundation Core platform upgrades including independent notification and Quick Settings shades, cross-platform Quick Share, revised privacy dashboards, and an updated Recents overview.

The update is being distributed in phases over the air. Users can check for availability by navigating to Settings > System > System Update on supported hardware.

The deployment initiates today for the flagship Phone (3), with availability scheduled to expand across additional Nothing and CMF smartphone models over the coming months. Rollout is staggered, so availability may vary by region and device, said the company.
