Archos 50 Titanium Hands On

For every manufacturer, both big and small, there is a definite need to offer a variety of smartphones with different screen sizes. One of the most popular screen sizes at the moment, unless you’re Apple of course, is 5 inches which many manufacturers use for their flagship 1080p Full HD smartphones, like the LG G2 or Galaxy S4. However, at IFA 2013 as part of their Titanium entry level range, Archos unveiled the 50 Titanium to cater for those who want the big screen size without the hefty price tag.

The Archos 50 Titanium comes equipped with a 5inch qHD IPS display that sports 960 x 540 pixels and offers 220 pixels per inch density. For comparison, the Galaxy S4 also sports a 5 inch screen that offers 441 ppi so the Archos 50 Titanium is exactly half the density and clarity (but much less than half the cost of the Galaxy S4).

Archos 50 Titanium is powered by a dual-core 1.3GHz MediaTek processor and comes with 512MB RAM. There’s also 1GB storage that can be expanded by a microSD card and the Archos 50 Titanium supports up to 64GB additional storage through the card slot. It’s interesting that Archos have chosen only 512MB RAM and to our surprise, the Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean OS actually works well with the low-memory amount.

On the back of the Archos 50 Titanium is a 5MP camera which can record video at 720p HD resolution. The front facing VGA camera captures photos and videos in VGA resolution whilst the rear camera comes with autofocus, LED flash and digital zoom although any zooming at all results in pixelated images. Rounding off the specs list is a 2,100 mAh battery, integrated GPS with Assisted GPS support and an FM Radio. Archos 50 Titanium isn’t the slimmest smartphone as it measures 144.5 x 73.7 x 9.9 mm and weighs in at a pretty heavy 160 grams.

Overall the Archos 50 Titanium offers exactly what Archos set out to achieve – a low cost alternative to all the 5 inch smartphones and Archos have delivered a smartphone that has a satisfactory screen at a fraction of the price of some of its chief rivals. Although for a better yet still cost-effective solution, you could always check out the Archos Oxygen which has a 5inch Full HD 1080p screen.
