Apple introduces new iPad mini with OLED display and A20 Pro chip; India prices starts at Rs. 82,900

Apple has announced the latest generation of its iPad mini after 2 years, introducing a redesigned chassis with an OLED display, the A20 Pro system-on-chip, and an IP67 water and dust resistance rating. The device incorporates a series of hardware and software updates aimed at performance, display fidelity, and connectivity.

Design and Display

Measuring 5.4 mm in thickness, the new iPad mini is thinner and lighter than its predecessor. It features reduced bezels—narrowed by 24 percent—which allow for a larger 8.5-inch Super Retina XDR OLED display while retaining the compact physical dimensions of the prior model.

The panel offers:

  • Brightness: Peak brightness of up to 1,200 nits, with 600 nits typical full-screen brightness for standard and high-dynamic-range content.
  • Low-Light Readability: A minimum brightness level of 1 nit.
  • Contrast: A 2,000,000:1 contrast ratio with P3 wide color gamut coverage.
  • Finish Options: A standard glossy finish as well as an optional anti-glare nano-texture glass.
  • Colors: Available in two exterior finishes: midnight and starlight.

The chassis is sealed to meet an IP67 rating, offering dust resistance and protection against water ingress during immersion up to standard limits.

A20 Pro Silicon and Internal Architecture

The tablet is powered by the A20 Pro chip, fabricated using a 2-nanometer process. The processor architecture includes:

  • CPU: Up to 6 cores, providing up to a 60 percent improvement in multithreaded processing over the prior model.
  • GPU: A 7-core graphics unit featuring dynamic caching, hardware-accelerated mesh shading, and ray tracing, with overall GPU output up to 2.7 times faster.
  • AI Processing: Integrated Neural Accelerators on each GPU core alongside a Dual 16-core Neural Engine (32 cores total in the 512GB tier), delivering up to 4.5 times faster AI compute performance for on-device machine learning workflows.
  • Memory: Unified memory bandwidth has more than doubled compared to the previous generation.
Audio, Cameras, and Connectivity

The updated iPad mini introduces an “Acoustic Display” audio system, routing display-coupled woofers and frame-mounted tweeters through a sealed cavity designed to maintain the device’s ingress protection.

The camera system has also been reoriented:

  • Front Camera: A 12MP Center Stage camera relocated to the landscape edge to support natural framing during horizontal video calls.
  • Rear Camera: A 12MP Wide sensor capable of 4K video recording up to 60 fps, paired with an Adaptive True Tone flash for document capture and photography.

Wireless and network hardware consists of two in-house components:

  • N1 Chip: Manages Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6, and Thread protocol connectivity.
  • C2 Modem: Drives cellular models, supporting digital eSIM deployment and yielding up to a 50 percent increase in cellular transmission speeds alongside improved power efficiency.
Software and Accessories

Shipping with iPadOS 27, the tablet includes Apple Intelligence features, an overhauled conversational Siri interface with on-screen context awareness, and privacy protections routed through on-device execution and Private Cloud Compute. The release also brings windowed app multitasking, user interface adjustments via Liquid Glass settings, and external display support slated for iPadOS 27.2.

Supported input peripherals include the Apple Pencil (USB-C) and the Apple Pencil Pro, which supports haptic squeeze gestures, barrel roll sensors, and Find My integration. A newly designed two-panel Smart Folio accessory crafted from TechWoven fabric will also be available in navy blue and taupe.
