WhatsApp adds guest calling without an account, calendar integrations coming later this year

WhatsApp Guest Calling

WhatsApp has introduced guest calling, allowing people without a WhatsApp account to join one-to-one and group calls through an invitation link. The calls are free, end-to-end encrypted and have no time limits, while group calls support up to 32 participants.

How WhatsApp guest calling works

WhatsApp users can create a call link from the Calls tab by tapping the + icon and creating a call link. They can then share it with the people they want to invite.

Guests can open the link in a computer browser, enter their name and wait in a waiting room until the host approves their entry. Only people with a WhatsApp account can create call links.

Once admitted, guests can use several in-call features, including:

  • Sharing their computer screen to collaborate and review materials.
  • Reacting with a thumbs-up or heart emoji.
  • Raising their hand to participate in the conversation.

WhatsApp restricts what guests can do during calls. Guests cannot see other participants’ phone numbers, send messages or directly add other people to the call. The host must approve each guest before they can join and can remove them at any time.

WhatsApp to add calendar integrations later this year

WhatsApp will introduce calendar integrations later this year, allowing users to create calls directly from their Google or Outlook calendar. Users will be able to install the WhatsApp plugin, connect their account and add a WhatsApp call link to a calendar invitation. Invitees will be able to join with or without a WhatsApp account.

Availability

WhatsApp said guest calling is being rolled out, while Google and Outlook calendar integrations will be introduced later this year.
