Android now lets users transfer passwords and passkeys between password managers


Android has introduced a new experience that lets users move passwords and passkeys directly between password managers without downloading them into a file. The feature works on devices running Android 8 and later.

Previously, transferring passwords could involve downloading them into an unencrypted text file, leaving the credentials unprotected on the device. Passkeys could not be transferred between password managers.

With the new process:

  • Passwords can be moved without downloading them into a file.
  • Passkeys can be transferred between password managers instead of being recreated across multiple sites and apps.
  • Users can move both passwords and passkeys when switching to a new password manager.
How to transfer passwords and passkeys

Users can start the process by opening their new password manager and selecting the option to import or copy passwords and passkeys from another provider. The password manager then hands the transfer process over to Android.

The transfer involves the following steps:

  1. Start the move: Android automatically detects existing password managers on the device and shows which ones users can import their data from.
  2. Select the password manager: After tapping Continue, Android takes users to the existing password manager, where they can select the passwords and passkeys to transfer.
  3. Review and authorize: Users can review the selected data and authorize the transfer. They may need to sign in to the existing password manager, while passkey transfers may require a recovery key.
  4. Complete the transfer: Once authorized, Android securely transfers the data between the apps within a few seconds.

A screen lock, such as a PIN, pattern, or fingerprint, is required to import passwords and passkeys on Android. If a device does not have a screen lock, users will be asked to set one up.

If passwords that already exist in Google Password Manager are imported, duplicate entries are not added. If no passwords are found from the other password manager or the data is broken, the import might not work.

For passkeys on a new device, users may need to use the old device’s screen lock or their Google Password Manager PIN to access the passkeys.
