WhatsApp gets in-app bill payments in India

WhatsApp has introduced an in-app bill payment feature in India, enabling users to view, manage, and pay household and utility bills directly on the platform.

The service is integrated with the Bharat Connect (formerly BBPS) network, connecting users to 22,722 billers across 30 categories, such as electricity, water, piped gas, FASTag recharges, insurance premiums, credit card bills, and loan repayments.

The update allows users to access bill management tools directly from the main interface by tapping the rupee (₹) icon at the top of the home screen.

Core Capabilities
  • Pre-Fetched Bill Summaries: The platform automatically retrieves upcoming dues for linked accounts. Biller details from previous transactions are stored on the Payments Home screen for recurring access.
  • Multi-Account Management: Users can link and track multiple consumer accounts under a single utility provider (e.g., separate connections for home, office, or relatives).
  • Categorized Discovery: Frequently used categories are highlighted on the main payments screen, alongside a directory providing access to the remaining categories.
  • Payment Flexibility: Supported payment methods include Unified Payments Interface (UPI), debit cards, and credit cards.
Payment Workflow
  1. Open WhatsApp and select the icon on the top navigation bar.
  2. Choose the relevant bill category and specific provider.
  3. Enter and confirm the required consumer or account identifier.
  4. Verify the auto-fetched bill details and outstanding amount.
  5. Select a preferred payment method (UPI, Debit Card, or Credit Card).
  6. Authorize and complete the transaction.
Expansion of In-App Services

The introduction of bill payments builds upon WhatsApp’s existing transaction and public utility services in the Indian market, which include mobile recharges, metro transit ticketing, and official citizen services delivered via automated chatbots.

Integrating utility payments brings recurring, high-frequency financial obligations into the existing chat interface.

The feature is rolling out on a gradual basis across India and is scheduled to reach all Android and iOS users over the coming weeks.
