Google Gemini gets new study tools as Google offers one year of AI plans free to students

Google is offering one year of a Google AI plan free to eligible college students around the world, along with new and enhanced study tools in Gemini and Google Search.

Google AI plans for students

Starting today, eligible college students can get a 12-month Google AI plan at no cost.

Google AI Pro for eligible students in the U.S. includes:

  • 4x higher usage limits in Gemini
  • Access to Gemini Spark
  • Gemini in Google apps such as Gmail and Google Docs
  • 5TB of storage
  • Google Health Premium

Google AI Plus for eligible students in over 140 markets where it is available, including India, includes:

  • Access to Gemini Omni
  • 2x higher usage limits in Gemini
  • 400GB of storage

Google is also offering a Google AI Pro and YouTube Premium bundle for up to 70% off for students.

Gemini study tools

The new student hub in the Gemini app brings together study notebooks, flashcards, and practice quizzes. Students can access it at gemini.google.com/students.

The study features include:

Study notebooks

Launched in June, these let students upload class materials such as lecture notes. Gemini creates a game plan to break down learning topics, identifies knowledge gaps through diagnostic quizzes, and generates custom, bite-sized lessons and quizzes with a real-time progress dashboard.

Google says graphs and images will be added to lessons in the coming weeks. Gemini can also add key dates, including exams and assignment deadlines, from a syllabus to Google Calendar with the student’s permission. Students with access to Google AI Plus or Google AI Pro can create more notebooks and use more sources.

Interactive visualizations

Gemini can generate functional 3D simulations and visual elements such as tables and grids based on a question. Examples include a 3D DNA structure that can be rotated and zoomed, a simulation showing energy transfer in a pendulum, and an interactive table for cash burn rates.

Deep Research in Gemini Live

Gemini Live can be used to discuss problem sets and materials from Google Drive. Deep Research in Gemini Live lets users launch comprehensive, multi-step research reports through voice conversations. Gemini works asynchronously in the background and sends a notification when the report is ready.

Users can close the chat, lock the screen, or continue with other activities while it works. Once the report is ready, they can discuss the results, ask follow-up questions, or refine the details hands-free while retaining the research context.

Google Search study tools

Google is also introducing new learning features in Search. Students will be able to:

  • Generate interactive visuals to understand complex concepts
  • Take practice quizzes for any subject, including standardized tests
  • Learn step-by-step using Google Lens
  • Organize projects with notebooks
  • Create custom files to organize their studies
