Google Maps is introducing three updates designed to simplify how users contribute photos, videos, and reviews, while also improving how they track their activity on the platform. The updates focus on quicker media sharing, AI-generated caption suggestions using Gemini models, and enhanced visibility of contributions through profiles and the Local Guides program.
Google Maps New Updates
1. Faster access to photos and videos
Google Maps now highlights recent photos and videos directly within the Contribute tab when media access is enabled on the device. This allows users to quickly select and upload content from their recent experiences without manually searching through their gallery. The feature is designed to streamline the process of sharing visual content on the platform.

2. Gemini-powered caption suggestions
Google Maps is adding AI-based caption suggestions powered by Gemini models. After selecting photos, the system analyzes the images and generates draft captions that users can edit or remove before posting. This helps users add context to their uploads more efficiently while retaining full control over the final caption.

3. Improved contribution tracking and profile visibility
Google Maps is updating how user contributions are displayed. Total points will now be shown directly in the Contribute tab, while Local Guide levels will be more prominently featured on profile pages. Achievement badges are also being redesigned to clearly indicate contributor roles, such as frequent reviewers or photographers.

In addition, gold-colored profiles will highlight high-level contributors, making it easier to identify trusted users when viewing reviews.
