WhatsApp has announced new updates to its group chat experience, introducing features that focus on identity clarity, message expression, and event coordination. The additions include member tags, text-based stickers, and enhanced event reminder controls, designed to work across devices regardless of platform.
New group chat features (2026)
Member tags
WhatsApp now allows users to assign themselves a custom tag within each group chat. These tags describe a user’s role or identity in that specific group and can be different for every group they are part of. For example, a user can appear as “Anna’s Dad” in one group and “Goalkeeper” in another. Tags are visible to group members and provide added context during conversations.
Text stickers
Users can now turn any typed word into a sticker by entering text into Sticker Search. Newly created text stickers can be added directly to sticker packs without needing to send them in a chat first. This change simplifies saving and reusing custom text stickers across conversations.
Event reminders
When creating and sharing an event in a group chat, users can now set custom early reminders for invitees. These reminders are designed to help participants remember upcoming activities, whether the event involves attending an in-person gathering or joining a scheduled call.
Availability
WhatsApp is rolling out these new group chat features gradually. Availability will expand to more users over time.
