Google Photos gets light mode, streamlined menus, photo stacks, and badges

Google has rolled out a major redesign for the ‘Your Photo’ view in the Google Photos app, offering a cleaner, more modern, and user-friendly experience. The update focuses on improving navigation, accessibility, and organization, while retaining all existing features.

Key highlights of the redesign include:

  • New Light Mode: Photos now automatically switch between light and dark mode, matching your device’s settings.
  • Quick Info Display: Date, time, and location details appear clearly at the top of each photo for easy reference.
  • Streamlined Actions Menu: Many key actions are now grouped under a simplified three-dot menu for easier navigation.

All previous features remain accessible. The Add to (+) button at the bottom still lets you organize photos into albums, archive them, or move them to your Locked Folder.

The updated three-dot menu offers:

  • About photo details
  • Google Lens
  • Create options
  • Cast to devices
  • Save as (for Live or Motion photos)
  • Download or Delete from device

Photo stacks and bursts now have a dedicated three-dot icon on the selected thumbnail. From here, you can change the top pick, unstack, remove photos, or multi-select for bulk actions.

New badges allow you to:

  • Change photo categories
  • Play or pause Live/Motion photos
  • Save shared photos to your library
  • Manage backups and storage
Availability

The company said the redesign is now live on the Google Photos iOS app and will soon be available on Android.
