Spotify rolls out updates to improve music personalization and control

Spotify on Wednesday announced a series of updates aimed at giving users more control over their music experience. The company said these features offer new ways to curate playlists, refine recommendations, and shape their listening journey.

Upgraded Listening for Premium Users

Premium subscribers now have access to an upgraded Queue feature, located by tapping the three-line icon on the Now Playing screen. The revamped design offers:

  • Shuffle and Smart Shuffle
  • Repeat mode
  • Sleep Timer

Spotify will now suggest tracks after the queued songs end, allowing users to choose what plays next. For users who prefer their own selected tracks, Autoplay and Smart Shuffle can be turned off in the app settings. A new Hide button enables skipping songs from playlists across all devices.

In addition, Spotify is testing a 30-day Snooze feature for Premium users, temporarily pausing songs from their recommendations. This feature is expected to roll out to more users soon.

Simplified Playlist Customization

The mobile app now provides easier playlist management. Users can:

  • Add or delete songs
  • Rearrange tracks
  • Edit titles or create custom cover images

Listeners in Australia, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, South Africa, the UK, and the US can convert their Liked Songs into playlists by grouping tracks by genre and selecting the “generate playlist” option.

Seamless Curation and Collaboration

The Create button (“+”) in the bottom-right corner of the app makes it simple to:

  • Create playlists
  • Collaborate with friends
  • Join a Blend

Premium users in supported markets can also use the Create button to start a Jam for real-time group listening or use the AI Playlist feature to build playlists from creative prompts.

Last month, Spotify extended AI Playlist access to Premium users in English across over 40 additional markets, including regions in Africa, Asia, Europe, and the Caribbean.

The company also said that the ‘Your Library’ section, which houses personalized content, now appears as the third option at the bottom of the app.

Availability

These updates are rolling out gradually, starting on May 7, 2025.
