Gemini gets native AI image editing capabilities

Google is rolling out a new native image editing feature in the Gemini app. This lets users easily modify images created by AI or uploaded from their phone or computer. The update builds on the earlier release of AI Studio, where Google first offered direct AI image editing tools.

David Sharon, Group Product Manager and Multimodal Generation Lead for Gemini Apps, said the expansion follows positive feedback from users. He added that the new feature brings a “multi-step editing” process for more detailed and useful responses, combining text and visuals.

“For instance, users can ask Gemini to write a bedtime story about dragons and include matching images,” Sharon said.

On the security side, Sharon said all images generated or edited in Gemini will include the SynthID invisible digital watermark, just like before. He added that Google is also testing visible watermarks for these images.

Availability

The feature began its global rollout on April 30, 2025, and will expand over the coming weeks to users in more than 45 languages. It’s not yet accessible for Google Workspace or Education accounts.
