ChatGPT gets improved shopping, WhatsApp search, and citation features


OpenAI has started rolling out new updates to ChatGPT, introducing changes aimed at improving how users search, shop, and access information.

The company shared that its built-in search tool has seen rapid growth, registering more than 1 billion web searches just over the past week.

Shopping Enhancements

OpenAI is currently experimenting with a streamlined shopping feature designed to help users discover, compare, and buy products more easily within ChatGPT. Updates include:

  • More refined product listings
  • Visuals such as images, price tags, and customer reviews
  • Direct purchase links

OpenAI stated that all product listings are selected “independently” and clarified they are not “ads.”

Search via WhatsApp

Users can now interact with ChatGPT through WhatsApp by messaging +1-800-242-8478 (1-800-ChatGPT). This gives access to real-time information and live updates, such as sports scores.

Improved Citations

ChatGPT can now include several citations within one response, helping users verify information across different sources. A new highlight feature has also been added to clearly show which part of the response each citation refers to.

Trending and Autocomplete Tools

Search within ChatGPT is now faster with the addition of trending topics and autocomplete suggestions.

Rollout and Availability
  • Shopping improvements are rolling out starting today to Plus, Pro, Free, and logged-out users across all regions where ChatGPT is available. OpenAI expects the rollout to complete within a few days.
  • Search in WhatsApp is available everywhere ChatGPT is accessible.
