Air India adds Apple AirTag support for baggage tracking

Air India has integrated Apple AirTag into its baggage-tracking system and mobile app, allowing passengers with iPhone, iPad, or Mac devices to track their checked-in luggage securely. The airline highlighted that it’s the first in Asia to offer this feature.

The company stated that it handles over 100 million baggage items annually, with 99.6% arriving on time with passengers. For the small percentage delayed due to airport issues or missed flights, the AirTag integration will help speed up recovery.

Tracking Made Simple

Air India emphasized that passengers can track their bags in real time through the “My Trips” section of its mobile app, the “Track My Bags” tab on its website, or by scanning the barcode on their baggage receipt.

How to Use AirTag for Lost Bags
  • Report Missing Baggage: If baggage with an AirTag does not arrive at the destination, passengers should report it at Air India’s Baggage Counter. Staff will assist in filing a Property Irregularity Report (PIR).
  • Share AirTag Location: In the Apple “Find My” app, generate a “Share Item Location” link and provide it to Air India:
    • Mobile App: Visit the “Customer Support Portal”, select “Baggage”, then “Lost and Found Check-in Baggage”, and add the link.
    • Website: Go to the Customer Support Portal, choose “Lost and Found Check-in Baggage”, and submit the link with the PIR number.
  • Check Status: Passengers will receive an acknowledgment email from Air India with a link to track baggage status.
  • Baggage Recovery: Air India’s authorized airport teams will use the shared AirTag data to locate the bag if it is within airport premises and ensure its prompt return.

Air India assured that privacy is a priority. Location sharing automatically stops when the bag is recovered, expires after seven days, or can be manually disabled by the passenger at any time.

Availability

The airline stated that this feature requires Apple devices running iOS 18.2, iPadOS 18.2, or macOS 15.2 or later.

Dr. Satya Ramaswamy, Chief Digital & Technology Officer, Air India, speaking about the integration, said,

With this launch, we are excited to offer our guests an advanced option to help locate their baggage if it does not arrive at the destination on schedule. We are confident that our guests will find the baggage location capability, enabled by Apple’s AirTag and Share Item Location feature combined with Air India’s real-time baggage-tracking system on its website and mobile app, extremely helpful.
