Truecaller has launched the world’s first AI voice detection feature, the AI Call Scanner, to enhance its spam and scam-fighting capabilities. This innovative tool uses AI to identify AI-generated voices during phone calls and alert users in real-time.
Background and Need for AI Call Scanner
AI voice scams, which mimic human voices to extort money, have been increasing since their emergence around 2019. Scammers often use social media to collect voice samples and train AI to clone voices, which they then use to deceive the person’s family.
Recognizing the growing threat, Truecaller developed the AI Call Scanner to combat these sophisticated scams.
How AI Call Scanner Works
The AI Call Scanner is designed to differentiate between human and AI-generated voices, protecting users from scams. The feature is integrated into the Truecaller Android app. When a suspicious call is received, users can tap a button within the app to activate the AI Call Scanner.
The call is then merged with a secure line that records a sample of the caller’s voice. This sample is analyzed by Truecaller’s advanced AI model, which quickly determines if the voice is human or AI-generated.
Using the AI Call Scanner
- Set Truecaller as Your Calling App: Ensure Truecaller is your default calling app to access the AI Call Scanner feature.
- Activate AI Detection: If a call seems suspicious, tap the “Start AI Detection” button in the Truecaller app.
- Brief Pause for Analysis: The call will briefly be put on hold while the AI analyzes the voice.
Real-Time Analysis: An “Analyzing…” message will appear, indicating that the AI is working. - Immediate Feedback: During the call, you’ll receive a message indicating whether the voice is human or AI-generated, allowing you to take immediate action.
Future Developments
Truecaller says they are also exploring ways to improve the AI Call Scanner, including enhancing accuracy, reducing response times, and adapting to new voice synthesis technologies.
An iOS version is also in development, and there are plans to integrate the feature with other communication platforms and devices.
Availability
The AI Call Scanner is available on Android (version 14.6) as part of Truecaller’s Premium plan, which includes a free trial. Currently, it is only available in the U.S., with plans to expand to more countries soon.
Speaking on the launch, Alan Mamedi, CEO and Co-founder at Truecaller, said,
