Global 5G download speeds up 17% YoY in 2023: Ookla

Ookla Speedtest Intelligence has released new data highlighting the ongoing growth of 5G networks worldwide. Particularly noteworthy is the significant increase in 5G coverage in India throughout 2023.

Expanding 5G Reach

Recent analysis by Ookla indicates a notable improvement in global 5G performance, largely driven by emerging 5G markets like India, Malaysia, and Brazil.

This expansion is reflected in the increasing number of locations with 5G access. Despite this growth, 5G download speeds have continued to rise steadily, surging by 17% in 2023 to an impressive 207.42 Mbps.

Challenges in Upload Performance and Latency

While download speeds flourish, 5G upload performance has seen minimal improvement, with only a 1% increase year-on-year, reaching 19.90 Mbps.

Additionally, latency remains a persistent challenge, showing no significant change year-on-year. The median global user experiences a 5G connection latency of 44 ms, according to Ookla’s findings.
