Apple is planning significant changes to its AirPods lineup. They intend to update the earbuds’ design, cases, and enhance sound quality, Mark Gurman of Bloomberg reports.
Additionally, a new version of AirPods Max headphones is expected in 2024. Standard AirPods will receive an update in 2024, followed by AirPods Pro in 2025. The new AirPods and AirPods Pro will sport a fresh design and improved audio quality.
Fourth-Generation AirPods
With the arrival of the new AirPods, the existing second and third-generation models will be phased out. Instead, Apple will introduce two fourth-generation models at different price points.
These new AirPods will feature a design reminiscent of both current AirPods and AirPods Pro, with shorter stems. The upscale standard AirPods will offer noise cancellation, a feature previously limited to AirPods Pro and AirPods Max.
The fit of the new AirPods is expected to be improved, though the inclusion of silicone ear tips remains uncertain. The cases will be equipped with speakers to aid in locating lost AirPods, similar to the AirPods Pro, along with a USB-C charging port.
Additionally, Gurman cited that AirPods Max will adopt USB-C for charging and introduce new color options, with no other significant changes anticipated.
AirPods Pro Upgrade in 2025
In 2025, the AirPods Pro will undergo a redesign, receive a faster chip, and potentially incorporate features related to hearing health. There are rumors suggesting that they might function as hearing aids.
Release Timeline
Exact release dates for 2024 and 2025 remain uncertain. Apple typically unveils new models in the latter part of the year, coinciding with iPhone releases. Gurman speculates that the AirPods will likely be available later in the year, while the AirPods Max is expected to debut toward the year’s end.
