Samsung introduces stretchable OLED display, 2250 PPI display for VR

Samsung Stretchable AMOLED display

Samsung has announced that it will showcase world’s first stretchable OLED display at the Society for Information Display (SID) 2017 in Los Angeles, U.S. from 23rd to 25th May, 2017.

The 9.1-inch stretchable OLED panel that is scalable will be used for wearables, IoT, AI, and in-car displays. Compared to conventional flexible OLEDs that can be stretched only in only one direction, such as bending, folding, or rolling, stretchable OLED display can be deformed in more than two directions.

When the screen is pressed from above, it is stretched up and down and uses elasticity to recover. Samsung Display said that it has achieved the world’s highest level of strechability that maintains the original quality even when stretched to a depth of up to 12mm when the display is pressed.

Samsung will also showcase 1.96-inch UHD (3840X2160 pixels) LCD screen with world’s highest pixel density of 2250 pixels per inch (ppi) and 780,000 pixels, which is 15 times more than the a 5-inch QHD (2560X1440 pixels) smartphone display. It will be used for Virtual Reality (VR), Augmented Reality (AR) and holograms.
