Apple is planning to replace the OLED panels it currently uses on the Apple Watch with Micro LED technology sometime next year, according to a new report from Digitimes (via).

Micro LED display technology consumes low power and offers better color gamuts and brightness levels than LCD. These are more battery efficient and thinner than LCD because they do not require a backlight which makes them ideal for a smartwatches.

The report goes on saying that Apple is going with a Micro LED as it had acquired US-based Micro LED developer LuxVue Technology in May 2014. Moreover, it had also set up a laboratory in northern Taiwan for R&D back in 2015.

As per the report, Micro LED ranges in size from 1-micron to 100-micron, and production cost is higher than that for OLED panels currently. Apple released watch OS 3 with instant launch, control center, dock and more announced earlier this month at WWDC.

Apple is also expected to switch to OLED technology for a tenth anniversary iPhone in 2017.
